Our clients John and Amy are a professional couple with a love of dogs and old homes. They purchased this 100-year-old Craftsman bungalow in downtown DeForest, Wisconsin, as it met their primary needs for location, lifestyle, and beauty. One of the primary goals was a full kitchen remodel, upgrading the kitchen by creating a new design that remained partially closed off from the main living area. It needed to provide more cabinetry, a pantry, and more countertop space for food preparation. They also requested we eliminate the excessive number of doors in the kitchen. Our team designed a beautiful galley kitchen with a connection to a mudroom and a large opening to the dining room.

An Open Concept Kitchen Design

Thus bungalow had a dark, cluttered space with inadequate storage and little usable counter space (not to mention too many doors!). Our design updated the space for modern living by improving the flow and functionality. First, we opened the wall to the dining room, creating a pass-through opening. To give the space continuity and design, we refinished the original hardwood floors and incorporated the original molding to keep the character of the original design.

Increased Functionality And A Timeless Aesthetic

To improve functionality, update the space and add an aesthetic visual element, we replaced cabinetry with new Northern Classics maple cabinetry, with the Taylor door style.

The uppers are stained in Alloy, a warm gray. The base cabinetry is stained Nautical, a rich member of the navy blue family. To increase the visual aesthetic, mixed metals were used for the hardware by adding Miseno cabinet pulls in matte black for the uppers and champagne bronze on the base cabinetry. Contemporary Countertops

John and Amy wanted functionality, very little maintenance, and a visual aesthetic in the kitchen, so we chose a Silestone Pietra countertop in a matte finish to contrast and compliment the cabinetry. To complete the look and visual appeal of the kitchen, we installed a 6x6 gray Kaleidoscope mosaic tile with Delorean Gray grout.

A New Stainless Appliance Suite For This Home Remodel

In keeping with the functionality that our clients requested, we included a new appliance suite by LG featuring a French door refrigerator, An LG gas range, and an LG dishwasher. We added a focal point, stainless steel Zephy range hood, and completed the appliances with a Sharp Micro-Drawer. For filling large pots at the stove, we included a matte-black Signature Hardware wall-mounted pot filler over the stove.

John and Amy set the goal of updating their dark kitchen and adding functionality, storage, and a great look. We more than achieved their goal and gave them a dream kitchen that captures the character of their 100-year-old Craftsman bungalow and gives them a space perfect for a 21st-century lifestyle!
