Dave and Ruth, repeat clients from the Wildwood neighborhood in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, came to us for a laundry room and kitchen remodel. They moved back to the area a few years ago and recently called us to create a new kitchen design and update the laundry room. The couple’s existing kitchen was serviceable but had a few awkward elements. The refrigerator was in a line of cabinets along the back wall. It was set at an awkward angle, leaving a corner sticking out into the middle of the walkway. There was open shelving on both sides of the fridge, but no enclosed pantry space. The island lacked seating, and a cooktop and hood located in the island blocked the sight lines. While the kitchen was serviceable, it was in desperate need of a redesign.

Improvements for the Existing Kitchen

We began the new kitchen design with the goal of making functional and aesthetic improvements. Dave and Ruth told us they didn't want to move walls or change the kitchen's layout. They asked us to change the awkward elements and produce a design that reflected their style. We began by creating a straight run of cabinets along the long wall, incorporating the refrigerator and sink. We removed the awkward point in the walkway and a sub-wall at the end to extend the cabinets, including a new pantry cabinet.

A Mid-Century Inspired Interior Design

We leaned into the age of the home with a mid-century-inspired new kitchen design. The naturally finished cherry cabinetry and a beautiful piece of quartz on the island add visual appeal to the space, making the island a focal point. A prominent feature is the floor-to-ceiling cherry slat designs inspired by mid-century modern design. The slats create semi-transparent partitions, providing some separation while still allowing natural light to flow into the space. The can lights between the slats provide beautiful accent lighting

Updating the Laundry Room

Our focus for redesigning the laundry room was to transform its existing layout and design. The space featured large soffits that closed in the room, outdated linoleum flooring, and dated oak cabinets. Our redesign reflects the style of the kitchen. We added plenty of cabinetry and improved functionality by adding a small bench with hooks above and shoe storage below. The larger, deeper sink and improved storage add functionality, and by removing the soffits, we were able to run the upper cabinets all the way to the ceiling!

A Thirty-Year Realationship

This homes original kitchen featured some design elements that made it challenging to use, and the laundry room, a crucial part of the home, was in need of a refresh. This remodel not only strengthened our 30-year relationship with our wonderful clients but also provided them with the functional and beautiful spaces they had been hoping for.

No detail was too small to discuss and clarify with the Degnan Team at any phase of the project from design through completion. They were very responsive to our questions and helpful with suggestions. Their stated goal was that they wanted us to be satisfied upon completion, and we are. We recommend Degnan because we are confident that they will respond in a positive manner to all reasonable issues as they arise.
