Our clients Derek and Julie found us after spending several years in a relatively new home that they loved. Unfortunately, the kitchen was too dark and didn't meet their functional needs. The prior owner had selected a dark design palette complete with dark granite, dark wood flooring, and dark stained cabinets. After meeting with Derek and Julie, the big picture goal was to create a brighter, more functional, cheerful kitchen.

The most significant functional issue was the conflict between the refrigerator and the dishwasher. The two-level island had stone facing and a shape that didn't comfortably accommodate the family. Our kitchen design opened up the space, and we were able to transform the island in a way that helped to solve the functional problems in the kitchen!

Clean Bright Cabinets To The Ceiling

To open up and brighten the space, we used white Amish cabinetry, handcrafted in Wisconsin with shaker-style doors in pure white. The cabinets surround the perimeter of the kitchen space. The cabinetry stretches to the ceiling with a top row of illuminated cabinets with glass doors. This design gives the room a continuous horizontal line that draws the eye up. A two-tier crown molding completes the look. The result? A bright and cheerful kitchen with pure white cabinetry and the Daitile Carrara Veil quartz countertop standing in contrast with the beautiful dark textured wood floors.

Reconfiguring the Island To Improve Functionality

To improve the flow and functionality of the kitchen, we needed to address the existing island. It had a stone facing and an organic curvy shape that was not working for this large family. Our design team went to work, and with the expert craftsmanship of the carpenters, we were able to remove the stone, clean and refurbish a small section of the floor, and transform the island to solve most of the functionality issues. The island was lengthened towards the family room, allowing placement of the dishwasher left of the sink. This placement resolved the conflict between the refrigerator and the dishwasher. We painted the island a vibrant navy blue to add pizazz to the design. It is the perfect pop of color, making our design timeless, not trendy.

Tying In Family Room

By re-designing the island, we could leave the other appliances in their original locations. This kitchen design helped us complete the kitchen remodel at the low end of the budget range. The savings gave Derek and Julie the ability to continue their transformation into the family room. The existing cabinetry surrounding the fireplace matched the original dark cabinetry. The existing shaker doors were perfectly appropriate, as were the wood tops. Painting the cabinetry to match the kitchen cabinetry transformed the look of the family room. The line of the wooden countertop echoes the horizontal line of the stained wood on the range hood opposite it. A key design detail was leaving the wood shelves in the left bookcase, stained to match the mantle. It's the perfect design decision!

Solving Our Customer’s Kitchen Design Goals

The result of this remodeling project is a beautiful, bright, cheerful, and highly functional kitchen design with plenty of contrast and a pop of color. The family room ties in perfectly with the new kitchen design and feels transformed. Our clients love that the entire project came in within the lower-end of their budget range goal! All in all, a successful project full of beauty and value our clients love!
