Our clients dreamed of a waterpark-like family retreat at their home. A space where everyone could gather, have fun, and hang out for all sorts of recreation. They provided us with a specific list of goals for their new addition. These included an indoor pool, a six-person spa, an infrared sauna, and a dedicated changing room. They also wanted to include a family entertainment area where they could all hang out to watch football and basketball games on the TV and enjoy snacks and drinks. The homeowners also requested that the space incorporate big windows to let in plenty of natural light, as well as operable skylights.

Creating an Addition to House The Indoor Pool

This project was a challenging combination of functional and design requirements and included a tight project timeline. Our clients wanted to use the room as soon as possible, which required site excavation and pouring concrete in November, pool installation in December, and then the construction of the room over top of the finished pool. 

The functional requirements included creating a room to house the indoor pool, spa, sauna, and a bathroom/changing room complete with a shower. The addition of commercial-grade dehumidification, radiant floor heat in the stamped concrete floors, and finishes that would stand up to the moisture complete the functionality of the space. Design requirements included adding a large patio door on the west side of the addition, large south-facing windows to take advantage of the natural light, and smaller windows on the east side for privacy. Six functioning skylights and the windows flood the space with natural light throughout the day.

Adding Aesthetic Elements

Our aesthetic design fits perfectly within the constraints of the home. The room is wide open and low slung, creating a comfortable, casual, and relaxed atmosphere. We needed to create a design to accommodate the indoor pool, spa, and sauna that also worked around the second-story bedroom windows on the existing house. By stepping down 18-inches from the floor of the main house, we achieved our goal. Our color and materials palette is soothing and relaxing. We used faux beams to break up the expansive ceiling, and the skylights provide plenty of natural light. We included an electric fireplace in the design to add to the room's ambiance. The soothing gray walls and bright white ceiling disperse the abundant natural light throughout the space, and the beautiful stamped concrete floor completes the design.

 

In-Home Resort Amenities

In the end, the project was completed in just over five months of challenging winter work during a pandemic! The addition brings a whole new level of functionality to the home. It is an exceptional project that provides the homeowners and their children with the perfect place to relax and enjoy each other's company. We created the perfect retreat home where kids of all ages can relax, let go and have a blast!
