This Four Season Addition Made an Option Kitchen Possible
Our clients, Robert and Megan, are working parents in Madison, WI. They came to us looking for a kitchen remodel and a new four season room addition to create more space for their family. Their existing kitchen had been remodeled at some point, but it was closed off from the rest of the international-style house. The goal was to create a more open floor plan with spaces that flowed into each other and were updated for a 2025 lifestyle.

Creating an Improved Flow
The existing kitchen was closed off with a door that led to a small hallway. To improve the flow, we opened the walls to integrate the kitchen, dining room and screened porch off of the kitchen. This porch would become the new four season room. In the dining room, we incorporated a rounded soffit to the ceiling and rounded floating shelves to compliment the step down into the new four season room. The curves were inspired by the rounded screened porch that remains an outdoor living space from the original home.
This Room Addition Brought Natural Light Into The Kitchen
The goal of the four season room was to bring natural light into the new open-concept living space. We added many new windows and a sliding patio door to flood the space with natural light. The four season room was built using the existing concrete foundation and slab. We started by insulating the slab and raising it slightly. Next, we installed a floor heating system for comfort. We chose to keep the original footprint and layout so we wouldn’t incur any foundation or roof costs. This design decision also meant we did not need zoning approval for the new addition. The Addition and Remodeling Of This Kitchen Greatly Improved This Home
Because the home has historical significance and appears on the state and National Registry of Historic Places, our goal was to provide valuable upgrades and improvements for the family without impacting the home’s architecture. We achieved our goals thanks to our innovative design. The result? Robert and Megan now have the gorgeous open-concept floor plan they were seeking that complements and stays true to the home’s original international style and achieves their goals of adding additional living space for the family to enjoy while updating their home for their modern lifestyle.

“We were absolutely pleased with the design team. Co-Construct has been an effective way to communicate with everyone, and your team provided great service delivering product samples to our home. While there were some bumps in the road, PJ and Matt were great team members and we enjoyed your electricians and framers, too.”
