Nine Types of Shower Fixtures To Consider When Designing a Bathroom

Selecting Shower Fixtures To Create a Relaxing Bathroom Sanctuary

Your bathroom is your sanctuary. It's where you prepare for your day and wind down before bed. For many, the shower is a place to unwind and collect your thoughts. That's why you want to do everything to create a relaxing and inviting space, starting with shower design.

Choosing the perfect shower fixtures can make a world of difference and impacts everything from shower controls, water temperature, shower features, and the overall style and look of your bathroom. Today, you have many options when it comes to shower fixtures. In this installment, we will look at some of the most popular shower fixtures available for today's bathroom remodeling project.

Popular Choices of Shower Fixtures For Your Bathroom Remodeling

From the traditional fixed shower head to a shower tower system with steam, your shower fixtures can help create the perfect environment for relaxation and relieve the stresses of your day. Today's homeowners have a range of choices in water delivery systems and accessories like shower head filters. Here are some of the most popular options for your bathroom shower remodel.

1. The Fixed Showerhead

The standard in many bathrooms is the fixed showerhead. This shower fixture is affixed to the wall by a short pipe that allows water to flow through the head. Typically, a fixed showerhead is immobile but can be adjusted in small increments to change the angle at which the water is sprayed. Like other shower options, the fixed showerhead comes in many materials, metals, colors, and styles. The fixed showerhead is often the least expensive.

2. Tub Faucet

If you have a tub/shower, you'll want to install a tub faucet/showerhead combo. Most tub faucets are designed to match the showerhead and are sold together. As part of the package, you receive a showerhead, matching tub faucet, and diverter valve. The diverter can also include a thermostatic valve. The diverter is the most important element of the shower assembly and is required for a tub-shower combo.

3. Handheld Shower

Looking for a functional and multipurpose showerhead? A handheld shower might be a great option. These heads typically come with a docking station affixed to the wall. This gives you the functionality of a fixed showerhead. The handheld shower is connected to a hose that provides an increased range of motion.

4. Waterfall Showerhead

A waterfall head can be installed in any shower stall. It delivers a broad stream of water that invokes the primal feeling of standing under an actual waterfall or natural hot spring. It can be used with other types of showerheads to create a spa-like experience. It is not ideal for drought-prone areas because it dispenses water freely and extravagantly.

5. Rainfall Showerhead

The rainfall or overhead shower is a perfect way to create a decadent and relaxing shower experience in your home. The main difference between a fixed and rainfall head is that the water is dispensed from overhead near the ceiling rather than from an angle from the wall. This is called a rainfall showerhead because the water comes from overhead and evenly surrounds your body. A ceiling-mounted rainfall showerhead is usually much larger than a standard head and can have any shape or configuration.

6. Thermostatic Shower Valve

While not a showerhead, if you've ever jumped into a cold shower, installing a thermostatic shower valve will make that a thing of the past. Sometimes referred to as a thermostatic mixing valve, this valve allows you to preset the temperature of your shower. Mixing hot and cold water, the thermostatic valve instantly creates the perfect temperature for your shower. When shopping for a shower faucet, look for a fixture with a thermostatic feature.

7. Steam Shower

If you're looking for the ultimate spa experience at home. A steam shower is the ultimate luxury. A steam shower consists of a steam generator and a moisture-sealed enclosure. Installation for this one is best left to the professionals since steam can wreak havoc on the bathroom if it gets out of the shower enclosure.

8. Body Shower System

Why settle for a single showerhead when you can have multiple heads mounted on the walls surrounding your entire body in a relaxing, massaging spray? A body shower is directed and can save water by delivering it where needed. Often installed as a shower tower that incorporates a shower head, faucet controls, body jets, and sometimes a handheld shower in a metal column that mounts onto the wall.

9. Smart Shower

Again, not a showerhead, a smart shower uses the latest technology to control every element, including your preferred water temperature, flow rate, and shower duration. It's operated by a central control panel, digital assistant, or smartphone app.

So, Which Shower Fixtures Are Right for You?

Choosing the right shower fixtures can be challenging. With so many different types, styles, materials, and features available, it can feel overwhelming. To determine your best choice, consider your needs and how you will use the shower.

If having a basic shower is important to you, a fixed showerhead might be the best option. There are several styles and models, and many come with elaborate spray patterns that can mimic the best shower experience. For others, having a flexible option is their preference. For them, a handheld shower might be the best choice. If you want a luxurious spa-like experience, a shower system with a thermostatic valve or a steam shower with smart shower control might be a great choice. The bottom line is that it is a personal preference, and your only limits are space and budget.
